Gender Equality and Atilim University

All institutions, corporations and organizations which have effect and authority in the society have duties and responsibilities in the establishment of gender equality in the society in accordance with the Article 10 of the Constitution of Turkish Republic, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) signed by our country and the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women And Domestic Violence.

Universities, which have three fundamental functions including education, research and community service, also have duties and responsibilities for the establishment of gender equality in the society. Within this scope, Atilim University, through KASAUM, has carried out a large number of activities in order to fulfill its own responsibility in order to create a more egalitarian, libertarian and secure university and educational environment and serve as a model in the society since 2010.

In addition, in 2015, The Council of Higher Education (YOK) took the general council resolution in order to reflect an approach sensitive to gender equality within the frame of the universities under the roof of YOK and all other organizations and published HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS GENDER EQUALITY MANNER DECLARATION. Within this frame, the responsibilities of universities were determined in four main subjects:  

A. Adding Gender Equality Course in the Curriculum as a Must Course,

B. Violence, Sexual Harassment, Abuse and Mobbing at Universities

C. Ensuring General Acceptance of Gender Equality at Universities,

D. Raising the Awareness of the Executors, Administrative and Academic Staff in Gender Equality. 


Atilim University has been carrying out activities within the scope of above-stated subjects through KASAUM with the sense of responsibility and improves these activities year by year*. Outstanding activities are as follows**:

A. The elective course ASEL 203 Gender and Women Rights which is available for all students of the University in Fall Term has been delivered since 2010. In addition, students have been given Certificate of Participation

B. In 2011, Atilim University Women’s Support Center (AKADEM) was established as a support mechanism in case of discrimination and violence or sexual harassment and assault.

C. KASAUM endeavors to raise gender equality awareness by organizing academic and social activities in which current issues and problems are discussed on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and March 8 International Working Women's Day each year.

D. In 2013, members of KASAUM published the book “Gender and Reflections” consisting of their academic articles.

In addition to these activities, “Gender Egalitarian University and Women Friendly Campus” project has been carried out since 2015.
